Professional Tattoo Aftercare Advice

Instructions

Take care of your tattoo the right way—so it stays vibrant and heals beautifully.

Wave recommends using Sorry Mom Tattoo Film for the initial healing phase, followed by Tough Cookie Aftercare for ongoing support.

Follow these steps closely to protect your new tattoo:

  1. Leave the Bandage On
Your Artist will apply Tattoo Film immediately after your session. This breathable, medical-grade film helps protect your tattoo from bacteria while allowing excess plasma to escape. Leave the film on for 24 hours, unless instructed otherwise by your artist. After removing the film, follow the cleaning instructions below.

  2. Wash Your Hands First
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your tattoo. Clean hands help prevent infection.

  3. Gently Clean the Tattoo
Once the film is removed: wash the tattoo gently using lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap (like Dr. Bronner’s Unscented or Dial). Use clean hands only—no washcloths, sponges, or loofahs.

  4. Dry With Care
Gently pat dry your tattoo with a clean, soft towel or paper towel. Never rub—it can damage the skin and irritate the tattoo.

  5. Apply Aftercare
Once the tattoo is clean and dry, apply a thin layer of Aftercare, a product with natural, skin-soothing ingredients formulated specifically for healing tattoos. Use a small amount—more isn't better. Reapply as needed to keep your tattoo lightly moisturized, but not greasy.

  6. Avoid Picking or Scratching
As your tattoo heals, it may scab or peel. This is normal. Do not scratch, pick, or peel—it can pull out ink or cause scarring.

  7. Protect from Sunlight
Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and away from tanning beds for at least 2–4 weeks. Once healed, always apply SPF to keep it looking fresh.

  8. No Soaking or Swimming
Avoid baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, and natural bodies of water during the healing process (usually 2–4 weeks). Stick to showers only.

  9. Wear Loose Clothing
Tight clothes can rub and irritate your tattoo. Stick to loose, breathable clothing during healing, especially the first few days.

  10. Stay in Touch
If you experience unusual symptoms—like excessive redness, swelling, or discharge—contact Wave or a medical professional right away.

Tattoo FAQ

  • The healing process usually takes about 2-4 weeks for the surface of the skin to heal. However, our team recommends aftercare for up to 6 months for the best outcome, vibrancy, and longevity of your new ink.

  • We currently do not offer piercings at our shop, and there are no immediate plans to add them. That said, we’re not completely closed off to the idea—so stay tuned for any future updates!

  • Our appointments are booked on an hourly basis, allowing each artist the time they need to focus on quality and detail. Once we know the scope of your tattoo, we’ll estimate how many hours it may take and schedule accordingly.

  • Pain is subjective and varies depending on the individual and the area of the body being tattooed. Some areas may be more sensitive, such as ribs or elbows, while others, like the upper arm or thigh, may be less painful. However, many people find the experience tolerable and manageable.

  • All of our artists work by appointment only, so we do not accept walk-ins for everyday bookings. However, we do host events throughout the year—like flash sales, community gatherings, and walk-in days—where you can stop by without an appointment. Follow us on social media to stay updated on upcoming opportunities!

  • After getting your tattoo, keep it clean by gently washing it with mild soap and lukewarm water. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free ointment and avoid picking or scratching the tattoo as it heals. Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your artist for the best results.

  • Yes, you can get a tattoo if you have sensitive skin, but it’s important to inform your artist beforehand. They can recommend special aftercare products and techniques to minimize irritation. If you have a history of skin reactions, consult with a dermatologist before getting a tattoo.

  • Yes, tattoos can often be covered up with a new design. A skilled artist will work with you to design a piece that can effectively conceal the old tattoo while creating a fresh, custom design. Larger or darker tattoos may require more creativity, but coverups are a great way to breathe new life into unwanted ink.

  • Our shop minimum is $100. This covers the time, materials, and setup required for even the smallest tattoos to be done safely and professionally.

  • It’s generally recommended to wait until your original tattoo is completely healed before considering a cover-up, which typically takes 2-4 weeks. This ensures the skin is in optimal condition for the new design and gives the artist a clean slate to work with.

  • A cover-up tattoo will be designed to camouflage your original tattoo, so it may look different from your original design. The focus will be on creatively incorporating the existing ink while introducing new elements that suit your aesthetic.

  • Yes, small tattoos can be incorporated into larger, more detailed cover-up designs. Artists will assess the existing tattoo and carefully craft a design that flows and enhances the overall look, turning the smaller tattoo into part of something bigger and more intricate.

  • The cost of a cover-up or tattoo repair depends on the size, complexity, and time required for the design. Typically, these types of tattoos may cost more than regular tattoos because they require more skill, creativity, and time to complete. It’s best to consult with your artist for a personalized estimate.

  • Yes, tattoo repairs are possible! If your tattoo has faded, blurred, or has been damaged over time, an artist can often restore it by enhancing the existing design or adding new elements. Repairs can revitalize your tattoo, making it look as fresh as the day it was done.
